Save Pinckney Colony!
On January 20, 2006 a sales contract was signed between the family of John and Nancy Pinckney and the Stokes, Bush & Barnes Land Co. of Decatur, GA, stipulating a purchase price of $10,000,000.00 for the Pinckney Point property. The Pinckney family agreed to a $5,000,000.00 reduction in the previously agreed upon purchase price of $15,000,000.00. The sale was closed during 2006 and the Pinckney Point property now belongs to the development company. The Pinckney Colony Neighborhood Association is adamantly opposed to the development of Pinckney Point. We continue to work with our legal team on pending litigation with Beaufort County over ownership and access issues concerning the unpaved portion of Pinckney Colony Road leading to Pinckney Point. A number of issues remain that the developer must address before any new development plan will be approved. Please join us in our ongoing battle to prevent the development of Pinckney Point! Check this website often for updates about future Pinckney Colony Neighborhood Association meetings and Beaufort County governmental meetings.
"Pinckney Colony is a rare and endangered land. David Pinckney farms his land in Pinckney Colony. Our fathers and grandfathers farmed the same land - our roots. They didn't get rich, but their rewards were the fruits of their labors, the love of the land, their families and neighbors. Where else will our children have the opportunity to see a farm, to appreciate Southern Beaufort County?"Photo and quotation courtesy of Mary O. Pinckney Merrick Keister The Mission of the Pinckney Colony Neighborhood Association is to preserve the Pinckney Point property in perpetuity to save its' unique character and thereby allow all citizens of Beaufort County to enjoy this land in its' undeveloped state.Pinckney Colony is zoned as a "Rural District". It is also one of the last places in southern Beaufort County that remains relatively unaffected by large scale development. The Colony peninsula is a quiet and serene natural setting where wildlife abounds and the land is still farmed today, as it has been for generations.Development will continue to transform Beaufort County. Highway 278 has been expanded to 6 lanes to handle the rapidly increasing volume of traffic. We believe that some areas of the County should be spared from development to preserve the natural beauty which has been responsible for the growth of Beaufort County. We ask that County officials follow through with previous plans to purchase Pinckney Point and preserve it as a Public Park that could be enjoyed by all residents of Beaufort County.
